By looking at Portimão as we cross the EN125 road bridge over Arade ria (drowned river valley), we can see how Nature was generous to this city of the Barlavento region in the Algarve. First of all, the river estuary made it possible to develop a riverside front that was used for decades as merely a quay for fishing boats. In very recent times, it was requalified, forming nowadays a pleasant and moder riverside walk with a marina, restaurants and terraces. Its privileged location in the surroundings of exceptional beaches makes all the difference, and this is, in fact, Portimão’s greatest added value. The first of these beaches is Rocha beach, a spectacular sand area, not only because of its extension, but also of its width. The sand seems to have grown between the rocks, emerging here and there as islands in an ocean. Its waters are peaceful and warm, whose temperatures are perfectly compatible with the Mediterranean ones. This beach paid the price of progress by urbanising all seaside road, as well as the zones situated a bit more inland, creating a continuous area that can no longer be distinguished from Portimão. Besides Rocha beach, there are also several beaches in the west direction, separated by cliffs. Some of them are rocky, others clayey. You will pass by Vau, Três Irmãos and Prainha beaches until you reach that unforgettable place, which is Alvor ria (drowned river valley). Born place of the last President of the 1st Portuguese Republic, writer Manuel Teixeira Gomes, Portimão has all the entertainment and infrastructures that modern tourism is supposed to provide.
