Monumental, full of granite and modern

porto

Discovering Porto is living endless contrasts. Its warmhearted conservative environment goes hand in hand with a creative modern city. Thie special atmosphere can be felt all over the city: in its streets, architecture and monuments, in the parks and gardens, in the terraces and commercial zones. Its topography is exceptional with Douro river crossing inclined slopes crowded with churches, gardens and popular quarters. Elegant bridges connect the two river banks. The first ones to be built are the major exponents of 18th century iron architecture. The granite is a leitmotif of the old city, whose main example is the Barroque Clérigos Tower. The city was born and developed in the Middle Ages. The Conquer of Portucale in 868 by Vímara Peres, a warrior of Afonso III, is considered Porto’s most ancient historical event. From the second half of the 6th century, the village was the headquarters of Portucale Dioceses, however from 868 it became the centre of the Conquer movement of the surroundinglands. Portugal’s name had its origin here. Revealing a very strng identity, Porto is proud of being known as the city of work, for the most important Portuguese economic groups are based here. Apart from this, Porto is also famous for several culture-related names, such as Almeida Garrett, Ramalho Ortigão, Soares dos Reis, Júlio Dinis, Raul Brandão, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Manoel de Oliveira, among many others. Nowadays, the city continues to be culturally influenced by avant-garde movements, creating innovative projects in terms of music, fashion and, mainly, architecture with several worldwide recognised names. Porto transcends its limits nowadays, emerging as the capital of a dynamic region, whose influence can be also felt in the Spanish Galicia region, namely through an association - Eixo Atlântico do Noroeste Peninsular – that includes nine ciies of the North of Portugal and nine Galician cities, whose main centres are Porto and Vigo.
