Pottery of Ribolhos

The clay working activity of Ribolhos is a secular tradition. The art of working with clay became the only means of livelihood of a people that suffered from the lack of any industrial activity and a precarious agriculture. The low wheel, stone basin, the bundle of wood, the sieve and the other instruments manufactured by the potter, are the articles that gave the name to Barros Negros Ribolhos. This type of black china is typical from the Montemuro mountains and, through this method, pitchers, jugs, pots, jars, and figurative art are produced. The disclosure and promotion of handicrafts is, essentially done by two Ribolhos barristas, Master Albino and Master Ze Maria. Today, the development of the barrista activity remains in the hands of Jorge Ferreira, which uses, on loan, the potter's wheel of Antonio Rodriguez, brother of José Maria Rodrigues. Jorge Ferreira works the clay by to support his family, but because he enjoys it and to preserve this noble tradition.
