It is a century-old procession mixing sacred and profane, whose origins are prior to the 17th century. This procession produces an unusual ritual. It is mainly celebrated on August 24th, since this is when runs around. Pilgrims and their children head to São Bartolomeu chapel and walk around the temple three times with chickens or black roosters. Young people are then led to the beach and plunged three times in a row in the seawaters. This holy bath sets evil back and cures diseases related to “devilish possession”, such as stutter, gout or epilepsy.
