“Queima das Fitas” is a living testimony of century-old academic traditions that are still well alive. These celebrations have a simple meaning: after burning his/her ribbons, the student can lead a bohemian life for a few days and have fun before the final exams’ season begins. During the Queima das Fitas week in May, students wear top hats and walking sticks, playing with the fact that they are nearly graduate students. Initially, only final year students burned their ribbons, however all students became increasingly involved in the celebration. The ribbon-burning tradition dates back to the decade of 50 of the 19th century.
