This was the first Medieval garden to be totally rebuilt in Portugal, inspired by illuminated manuscripts, tapestries and epoch literature. The project was conceived by architect Cristina Castel-Branco, who classifies it as the first in Portugal to meet the requirements of ICOMOS, UNESCO International Council on Monuments and Sites that works for the preservation and study of Parks, Gardens and Historical Sites. In the surroundings of the garden, there is a charm hotel nowadays, integrated in the “Relais et Chateaux” hotel chain. The name of the garden evokes the tragic love of to-be King D. Pedro I with noblewoman of Spanish parentage, who would be later murdered at the command of the ruling sovereign D. Afonso IV.
