The town of Ribeira Grande has a quite peculiar geographical layout within the Azorean islands, for it develops along the north coast of São Miguel, unlike most major urban centres of the Portuguese islands. This essentially agricultural land is surrounded by cultivated fields in part of its territory, while the remaining part is dominated by lavishly green vegetation (especially in Lombadas valley) and the immaculate white of the houses. Being one of the most fertile areas of the Azores, these lands produce potatoes, beets, cereals, tobacco, passion fruit and tea. Century-old Gorreana Factory is located here, as well as Porto Formoso Garden, producing the only European-made teas. In terms of the architectural heritage of the city, it is worth highlighting the main church, the City Hall building and the Manueline window of the house next door, the manor house Solar de São Vicente and the Espírito Santo Church with an impressive Baroque façade. Despite this rich history, nature is the main attraction for visitors. This council has indeed many must-see places. The most impressive and surprising is the Lagoa do Fogo (the fire lagoon), certainly one of the most beautiful of the archipelago, which offers a unique scenic show. Cascata da Caldeira is not so famous, but it is also worth visiting, pouring hot water, where you can bathe.
