This Franciscan monastery belonged to Penitência or S. Francisco religious order, a congregation supported by Queen D. Maria I, princess of Beira region. According to local tradition, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo – later Marquis de Pombal – studied in this very same convent where his uncle (Sebastião de Carvalho), who was also a priest, worked as a teacher.
