St John’s night is the big popular feast in Porto, especially in traditional city quarters, such as Ribeira. From June 23rd to 24th, the narrow streets of Porto fill up with “cascades” – sculptures of naïve taste consisting of a sort of popular altars for worshiping the saint – and locals go out in the streets with the traditional leek in their hands, which has been replaced nowadays by plastic hammers, used for gentling hitting on people’s heads. A true explosion of life and joy that lasts until the sunrise.
