Graciosa is a small Azorean island (the second smallest of the archipelago) of mild relieves, dry climate and peaceful landscapes. Unlike San Miguel and even Terceira, this is a typical Atlantic island. Next to Santa Cruz (the capital), the coastline is lower and full of rocks with small harbours and a beautiful coastline road overlooking the sea at the waves’ level and not from above. The biggest attraction of the Graciosa island is Caldeira da Graciosa, a huge volcanic crater that has the famous Furna de Enxofre inside, where you can observe fumarole activity. The architectural heritage of the island can be found essentially in the capital, basically consisting of the 16th century main church, Misericórdia church and some old houses. In Santa Cruz there is also a small Museum of Graciosa, preserving agricultural utensils and tools related to traditional crafts. The Carapacho thermal stations are located in Luz civil parish, situated by the sea, whose waters are good for treating rheumatism, colitis and skin problems. In terms of gastronomy, locals continue to serve visitors traditional fish stews and the sweet “queijadas da Graciosa”, only baked in Praia town.
