The foundation of Cruz Monastery dates back to the 12th century. The church’s monastery, in the middle of Coimbra city, the place where tombs of D. Afonso Henriques and D. Sancho I tombs are located, the first Kings of Portugal. The Silence Cloister by Manuel Pires is also worth mentioning. The monastery has a Manueline décor. The sacristy shows Manneirism influences, comprising the paintings of Cristóvão de Figueiredo and Grão Vasco. Santa Cruz café, one of Coimbra’s most peculiar and sought-after cafés, is located right next to the imposing church, namely in the former convent facilities.
