Santarém Castle is set in a hill fort, that was occupied by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. It was conquered and recovered under D. Afonso Henriques reign. In the following centuries it would be constantly enlarged and restored, namely until the liberal fights. The city rises from the plateau over Tejo river, surrounded by the wall paths. From the eight city doors only two have remained: Porta de Santiago and Porta do Sol. The later is situated in the former citadel, converted into a public garden and a viewpoint known as Portas do Sol
