São João da Barra Fort integrated the defensive system of Tejo port as the biggest national maritime fortress, playing a key role in the defence of Tejo Port. It is located in the east side of Carcavelos beach upon several rocks by the Tejo river. Its structure is uneven due to the several enlargements carried out throughout the centuries. It comprises many volumes in an almost pentagon-shaped drawing. Erected in the second half of the 16th century, it underwent several changes until 18th century. For example, the tower was converted into a lighthouse. Its strategic position is excellent connecting Tejo estuary to the narrow Boca do Inferno in Cascais. It can be seen from Marginal road and from the beach Praia da Torre. No visits are normally made.
