Built in the 16th century, the Main Church of São Sebastião (St. Sebastian) was erected in homage to the saint. Under the ruling period of D. João III, a plague epidemic hit the city and the inhabitants made a vow to build this church. The façade, initially built in Late Gothic style and then in Manueline style, stands out for the Royal weapons and the shield with the arrows of St. Sebastian’s martyrdom. It was later transformed in the 18th century. In the south façade, you will see two busts, allegedly depicting D. João III and D. Catarina. The interior is embellished by the altar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and by the gilt carved wood, so typical of D. João V ruling period. Attached to the church, there is a small sacred art museum that presents collections of gold and silver ware and the famous tapestry vestments woven in gold that belonged to the Baron and Bishop of Exeter, John Grandisson.
