The fortress has Medieval roots, but it was rebuilt in 1809 during the French invasions, becoming Sobral Fort, the most important of Linhas de Torres defensive line. It rises upon the top of the mountain over the city of Torres Vedras. It consists of three asymmetrical bastions. The walls have cannon loops, separated by deep gaps that form a Y-shape. In its highest peak, facing East, lie the ruins of a primitive chapel.
