According to oral tradition, this feast dates back to the 15th century and begins on Easter’s eve with the arrival of bag pipers, announcing the opening of the feast. On Easter Sunday, an interesting parade takes place with women riding donkeys along the town streets. Easter Monday is regarded as the most important day, since the mass in honour of Nossa Senhora da Atalaia is held after lunch, followed by a procession and an auction of flags and “fogaças” (typical local sweets). By the end of the auction, women return to Alcochete for a new parade, always riding their donkeys.
