Located in the western slope of Arrábida Mountain in a small bay sheltered by the winds, Sesimbra is land of sea and fishermen, who venture in the sea from an important fishing port. The village became famous for its rich diversified gastronomic offer, for there are many people who travel many miles only to eat fish and seafood in one of the many restaurants overlooking the bay. Region of rare beauty turned to the ocean, the city is also betting heavily on tourism development, because it can be proud of its architectural heritage of significant historical value. This is the case of seventeenth-century Fort of Santiago, located near the beach, and especially the medieval castle, rising at the top of the mountain, conquered to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques. Its walls are a privileged viewpoint, offering a view over the town, the bay and part of the mountain. Cape Espichel is located in the surrounding area, an isolated promontory with grandiose landscapes and also the cosy Meco beaches, very famous for a long time among nudism community. The Carnival of Sesimbra, attracting a growing number of persons who bring a lot of joy to town’s coastal road.
