Similar to Lisbon, which cannot be separated from Tejo river, so is Setúbal in relation to Sado. It is hard to describe or understand this city without mentioning this river. This connection is as intimate as ancient. Already in the 17th century, Friar Bernardo de Brito mentioned “a beautiful bay from where a big western ocean flows, a river that provides more fishing and navigation conditions than water supply”. Setúbal has developed along Sado right riverbank, sometimes using south-oriented rocks as defence against the water threats. Its estuary is vast, initially compressed between Tróia sand bank, in the south, and the hill where São Filipe Fort was built in the 17th century, in the north. It becomes wider upstream, forming a vast water mirror that stretches for miles, between fens and sandy margins. Despite pollution threats, dolphins still survive in this area, regarded as one of the main attractions of Setúbal quay. Estuary’s natural condition soon attracted foreign travellers, from Phoenicians to Greeks. Under Roman Empire, fish-salting industry became very important. The testimonies of those ancient centuries can be contemplated in the cellar of local Tourism Office headquarters (in Travessa Frei Gaspar), where Roman fish-salting tanks have been preserved and turned into museum pieces. Main church Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria rises upon in a small elevation, wherefrom the Medieval town began to evolve. The drawing of the railway network and Bonfim park testify 18th century development, along with the embankments, where the most important street of the city would be later built, Luísa Todi Avenue. The privilidged location in the surroundings of the river, the nature park, Arrábida mountain and beautiful beaches, such as Portinho da Arrábida, are among the major attractions of this city, whom some have called “Princess of Sado river”.
