South Shore of the Lima River

To visit the villages of Correlhã, Freixo, Rebordões, Fornelos, Boalhosa, Gandra or Ribeira is like bringing tradition to life. Festivals and pilgrimages still continue spiriting the people. And craftsmanship is expressed in most diverse ways.

Leave town from the tourism office in Ponte de Lima, by EN 203, towards the west. By the road, on the left, in the building of the former Municipal Abattoir, is located the Center for Arts and Culture, where to enjoy the local handicrafts. Continuing westwards, just before Km 20 of EN 203 exit and turn right. Between Lima and the national road lies the wide and fertile plain of Correlhã, the largest in the county. Walk down a cobbled path bordered by stone walls until an intersection, and then turn right again. Arrived to Lima, enjoy the houses along the banks, the old bridge and the new one too. Vines cover the path, offering a welcoming shade. The road moves away from Lima, to follow roughly parallel to the right bank of the river Trovela. The Chapel of Senhora das Neves and a beautiful outdoor stage invite you to a stop. Turn right at the next junction, crossing the Trovela. Next, is the town of Barros, with its granite houses. Soon after, in Pedrosa, the road splits up. Follow by the left, to Paço. At the junction, by the small Chapel of St. António, turn left, to Correlhã. A new junction by another chapel, and later, bifurcation where you take the right. You are in Correlhã (again in EN 203), one of the oldest and most vigourous parishes of Ribeira Lima. Here you can visit the Santuário da Senhora da Boa Morte, which remains the center of one of the most famous religious festivals in the county. From the top, enjoy the view over the fertile green plains of Lima.Continue by EN 203 towards the west, until a fork where the sign indicates "Barcelos 26 km '. A minor road on the left will pass the mountain, towards Barcelos. Ay at the third crossing on the left, after Facha, turn onto 'Navió 2 km". After Navió, Lugar do Fojo and Freixo. Freixo hosts a fair on Wednesdays which alternates fortnightly with the one in Ponte de Lima, on Mondays. On the hill of S. Cristóvão on July 25 is held one of the most important religious feasts in the county. From Largo de São Julião do Freixo take the EN 306, turning left to Friastelas. Here are Cabaços and Fojo Lobal, with its cornfields and vineyards. A plaque announces the arrival to Rebordões de Santa Maria. A crossing on the left leads to the center of the village, but we advise you to continue straight to next intersection and then turn right. You are in Souto de Rebordões , which was a municipality since the early days of nationality. In "Junta de Freguesia", turn right. Go up by the cobbled road and, before going down, find a beautiful house with granite stonework. Other paths cross the one that we are following, but let's keep going. The road widens, is paved now, and in a sharp turn, stop and visit a craftsman engaged in cooperage. Continue the route, passing over the A3 until Queijada. Then turn left (EN 201) and shortly thereafter, onto the right, at the crossroads where you see the sign 'Fornelos 5 km'. Fornelos presents interesting schist houses and numerous granaries. The road goes halfway up the valley of the Trovela, towards Armada. On the right, the ridges, lush grass and corn; on the left the mountain. At the junction of Armada-Vila Cha, go straight for Boalhosa. The village presents ethnographic and landscape elements of great interest and in Armada and Boalhosa fields there can still be found oaks and cork oaks, still graze 'garranos' (small horses), cattle and flocks of goats. Return to the junction of Armada-Vila Cha and go down, onto the right, towards Beiral of Lima and São Martinho de Gandra. The views of the Lima Valley and the Arga Mountain are magnificent. In this area one can find more than two dozen mansions and manor houses and here still subsist the old habits of spinning, weaving and embroidering linen. In São Martinho da Gandra, it is a must to visit Arval - Artesões Reunidos do Vale do Lima, which is dedicated to weaving and embroidery, as well as the "Casa das Sereias" with its popular interpretations of Renaissance themes. And on feast days, folk dances by the oldest folk group of Ponte de Lima: the Rancho das Lavradeiras de São Martinho da Gandra. Return to Ponte de Lima by EN 203.
