The Cavalhadas are one of the most curious festivities in the Azores, occurring on S. Peter's Day. The festival includes a parade on horseback, which seems to have been inspired by the medieval tournaments. The knights, pikemen, dispensers and trumpeters dressed in white with cloaks and red bands, mounted on shining horses, concentrate by the 'Solar de Mafoma' (Manor of Mohammed), a manor dating from the eighteenth century, and begin a ride to the sound of horns behind the "king", a character with a long beard. This colorful show goes then towards the center of the city of Ribeira Grande and has its culmination in the Church of St. Peter, when the "king" welcomes the saint with rhymed greetings and makes his horse to put his front paws on the portal of the church.
