Stained glass windows are paintings on glass or a glass with colours. The art of stained glass met great developments in Portugal, mainly in the Monastery of Batalha, where a school was established to operate for more than two centuries. The twelfth century marks the beginning of an important era, unprecedented in the art of stained glass. In the seventeenth century this art decays and stained glass becomes "secular" stripped of its mystical function. In the twentieth century, some artists attempted to revive the art of painting glass. One of the places with some of the earliest work worthy of interest is the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Lisbon, with stained glass authored by Almada Negreiros. Apart from Almada, other painters performed in this area, such as Lino Antonio, and Antonio Lino Rebocho. Today, the stained glass is used in the decoration of houses, shops, restaurants, etc.
