This typical recipe of Almeirim is related to a legend, according to which a tired hungry friar knocked on the door of a manor house, after a long journey, and asked the cooker to let him prepare a soup. He also told her not to worry, for all he needed was a pot, water, salt and a river stone that he brought with him. However, as soon as the water began to boil, the friar started to ask for several ingredients, one at a time: beans, sausages, cabbage…The result was a tasty soup that remains the symbol of human genius. It is still a tradition to serve the soup with a pebble or a small stone.
