The sweetmeats of Beira Interior are austere and of popular origin. Therefore, rich candy eggs, almonds and sugar found in other regions are not to be found here. The relative scarcity of female convents helps to explain this peculiarity, which finds its exception in Viseu, heir to the sweets of the monastery of Bom Jesus. It is not known if this was the origin of these delicious cookies, however its conventual characteristics apparently indicate that.
