It is the longest humid zone in the country, presenting a great biodiversity and variety of habitats, along with one of the biggest continuous fen areas. This is a highly valuable and important natural reserve, due to its migrating aquatic bird fauna, around 194 regular species in total. This ecosystem plays a major role in the preservation of 14 bird species. The surrounding land area has 35 mammal species, such as the otter, 9 reptile species and 11 amphibious species. As far as flora is concerned, it is worth highlighting the reed plantation, grass, and several herbaceous species. The reserve also embraces small islands (Póvoa, Alhandra and Lombo do Tejo), salt ponds and part of the attached irrigated fields (“lezíria”). Two full reserves were classified here: the Full Reserve of Mouchão do Lombo do Tejo that protects the nesting of some species; and Full Reserve of Pancas, including the greatest fen area of the estuary, stretching from Sorraia river mouth to Alcochete
