These squared tambourines can be found in the eastern strip of the country, from the Alto Tras-os-Montes to the river Douro and from Guarda to Baixo Alentejo, strips where sheepherding takes place. In Guarda and Baixo Alentejo these musical tambourines are named "adufes". They are linked to the authentic traditional folk vocal music, with archaic origins, and is always played by women.
