Known in the past as puff pastry sticks, Tentúgal pastries were a sweet speciality recipe of Nossa Senhora da Natividade Convent. Around 1890, the guest house Hospedaria Dona Maria da Conceição, the only one in the cart way between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, began to bake and to sell these puff pastry sticks. A relative of Mrs. Conceição Faria, who worked as an assistant in the Convent, taught her the recipe and its baking art. Until the 50’s decade of the 20th century, this family was the only one to have the exclusivity rights over the recipe. Nevertheless, from that period onwards a new baker also began to produce and to sell these popular sweets, known as “Tentúgal pastries”. Since then production has increased and became industrialised, which turned out to be quite profitable for the former Tentúgal town, increasing local wealth and employment.
