This reserve was created in 1986 to protect terns (marine birds), and it is located in the south coast of Madeira island. It presents a great biological diversity and natural beauty, standing out as the only exclusively marine reserve in the country. Existing marine fauna includes some big-dimensioned fishes, namely a colony of jewfish, the icon of the reserve, as well as other coastline species, such as the sheepshead and the moray, and other interesting groups of garden eels, so typical of the seas of Madeira island. Due to its beauty, this area attracts a growing number of divers, also providing good conditions for aquatic photography.
