This monumental square delimited by three wings and open to Tejo estuary is also known as “Terreiro do Paço” (Palace Square), since the Royal House was based here from the 16th century to the 1755 earthquake. The square stands out for the triumphal arch of Rua Augusta, only finished in the second half of the 19th century, and the equestrian statue of D. José I, signed by Machado de Castro. It is the result of the reconstruction works carried out by Marquis de Pombal after the total destruction of Lisbon’s downtown by the 1755 earthquake. A new city was planed and organised in quarters of module buildings, divided by wide rectilinear streets, according to the Enlightenment models of the age. Several Ministries and public services are located here.
