Valença, a fortified square, located by the Spanish border, was a key-element of Minho region frontier defence. The set of walls, gaps and bastions, along with neighbour Galician city Tuy, applied for UNESCO World Heritage sites. This historical centre, delimited by walls, apart from its monumental value, also attracts many Galician visitors. In 1882, the first bridge ever between Portugal and Spain was built here, crossing Minho river, used for both road and railway connection purposes. Beautiful landscapes, the vicinity to Minho river and a bike path linking Valença and the neighbour Monção are among the highlights of this border council. It benefits from railway (to Porto and Vigo) and highway connections – A23 (to Braga and Porto). It has also a new international road bridge to Spain.
