The convent opened in the end of the 15th century and King Afonso V donated it to São Francisco Order. The building continuously integrated stylistic elements of following epochs. The portal is still Gothic with bas-reliefs in flame-like style. In the cloister, there is a mixture of both Gothic and Manueline elements. The Mannerism pulpit has also Baroque features, such as pattern tiles and the altarpieces in gilt carved wood. Set in a hill, the rather small area of the convent wall stands out for the botanical value of its lush forest. Quite peculiar about this convent is the fact that it still houses a monastic community that produces and sells plants and natural medicines. We should draw our attention to the giant climbing plant, covering almost the whole cloister. (National Monument)
