Covering the whole island of Santa Maria, the first of the Azorean archipelago to be discovered by Portuguese, the council of Vila do Porto has a unique urban centre (the town with the same name), organised in two areas. The oldest one was established along the crest of an elevation by the coast between valleys crossed by river streans, presenting a Medieval Renaissance style structure. Some of the architecturally interesting highlights of this land can be found here, such as the Main Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, Conceição hermitage, São Francisco Convent, which is the town hall nowadays, and Misericórdia Church built in homage to the Holy Spirit and Passos procession. Above this area is located the Airport Quarter, which was a small garden city, typical of the urban planning of the mid 20th century, as a result of the settlement of emergency airport facilities, erected by the Americas from 1944 to 1946. East of Vila do Porto there is Praia Formosa, one of the most beautiful beaches of the whole Azorean archipelago, one of the few beaches in the Azores to have light sands, as well as beautiful setting surrounded by vegetation and some old houses. This is the ideal beach for bathing, integrated in a natural reserve. Santa Maria’s highest peak is Pico Alto (590m), where you will find a perfect viewpoint, offering a wide panoramic view over the island. Another privileged observation spot is Espigão Viewpoint. From this spot you will have a view over local vineyard slopes and a never-ending sea.
