Situated in the south coast of São Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo was the capital of the island until 1522, when it underwent two strong earthquakes that destroyed it almost completely. From that moment on, the settlement began to lose importance to Ponta Delgada, despite some prosperous phases fostered by orange and pineapple export. Its architectural heritage still reflects the glow of the past, not only in the main church, but also in São Francisco Convent. However, a peculiar geological formation – the inlet of Vila Franca – still attracts the majority of visitors to this locality. From an extinct volcano crater an inlet was created with a circular shaped natural pool, ideal for sunbathers and diving fans. Other natural paradise of the council is the Congro lagoon, also the crater if an extinct volcano with its dark green waters surrounded by lavish vegetation, and the lagoon of the water lilies Lagoa dos Nenúfares, almost totally covered by these plants. Part of this fantastic Fire Lagoon is also situated in this council, but the main part of it can be found in Ribeira Grande municipality. In terms of beaches, it is worth highlighting Água d’Alto with crystal-clear waters and a beautiful landscape setting, actually one of the most appreciated of São Miguel. A final note to the arts of the council: gastronomy, namely the delicious “queijadas de Vila Franca” and handicraft, whose main symbol is the famous pottery producing several everyday life objects used by locals, such as plates, cups and casseroles.
