VILA NOVA DE CERVEIRA

Land of arts by the Minho river

Placed upon the Minho river in the border with Spain, Vila Nova de Cerveira was founded by King D. Dinis in 1317, in a time when its geographical location was extremely important for defending the riverside passage that leads to the Ribeira Lima region. In order to protect the new settlement, this king ordered the construction of an 8-tower oval-shaped fortress. Throughout the centuries, the castle underwent succeeding transformations and a part of it belongs today to the Pousada D. Dinis. Inside the wall perimeter, the ancient Town Hall house, the 16th century pillory and the 16th century Misericórdia Church were preserved. In the street Rua Direita, there is a Gothic arch that was included in the old Medieval Governor’s Palace. Apart from its historical heritage, the town also offers a great natural richness that you can contemplate, for instance, in the Viewpoint of Monte da Senhora da Encarnação. Here you will also find a metallic sculpture of a deer (“cervo” in Portuguese and the town was thus named after it), offering one of the most astonishing views of Minho river, a true trade mark of the region, where a beautiful green landscape surrounds the river with its two peculiar islands: Boaega and Ilha dos Amores. Despite being a modest town, whose economy basically relies on agriculture, Vila Nova de Cerveira began to be part of the main cultural routes of the country thanks to an important art biennale that regularly opens its doors to the artists of the four corners of the world.
