The important findings of rock engravings of Côa Valley transformed this council in an internationally renowned destination thanks to an extremely rich archaeological heritage that transports us to the origins of the Palaeolithic Man who inhabited these lands 20 thousands years ago. Nowadays, the region presents one of the biggest rock art centres in Europe and the greatest world collection of open-air rock engravings, classified World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Apart from them, there are also Roman vestiges and other historical testimonies such as Medieval castles, fort hills, pillories, manor houses and religious temples, namely the beautiful Main Church in Gothic Manueline style and the Baroque Santo António Chapel. This land belonged to the Portuguese Crown in the beginning of the nationality, also called the almond tree capital, since there are many almond trees in this region. We recommend therefore a visit to this “Warm Land” city in the middle of February and in the first week of March, where you can watch the impressive show of blossoming almond trees.
