These clay dolls are designed by "mascatos" and are originally from Vila Nova de Gaia. They do not try to copy any other type of doll, like those from Barcelos or Estremoz,but they create new figures; among the most common are the miller and donkey, the music band, monk, among others.These clay figures (mascatos) are used in nativity sets and in the "S. João cascatas" during the Popular Saints' Festivals.
