Situated in the right margin of Guadiana river next to its estuary, Vila Real de Santo António is one of the few Portuguese council formed by two parts with no geographical continuity. The settlement was founded in 1773, a decision of Marquis de Pombal, who wanted to reinforce Portuguese presence in the estuary of Guadiana river before Ayamonte. The construction was quite fast, according the very same principles that were on the basis of Lisbon’s reconstruction after the quake. In only five months, the whole central area consisting of a wide square, several perpendicular streets with symmetrical houses and a great coastal road avenue, was erected from zero. This council is rich in historical testimonies, as well as in natural heritage. The economic basis of the council is the tertiary sector, revealing a great development of tourism and trade. However, vegetable and table grape plantation is important, as well as sardine and tuna fishing. The city has canned fish and shipbuilding industries. 4km west is located the famous Monte Gordo beach, a famous seaside resort of the Sotavento region in the Algarve and next to it you will find the beach Praia Verde, a peaceful place with beautiful dines and mild waters. North of the region there is the Natural Reserve of Castro Marim Fen Area, as well as the Natural Reserve of Vila Real de Santo António with a high ecological value. A final note to the simple but beautiful village of Cacela-a-Velha that strikes visitors for its views over the sea and the gastronomy.
