Description of the place: Vilar Maior village is situated 22km northeast from council’s headquarters Sabugal, nearly halfway between Sabugal and the frontier of VIlar Formoso. It played a strategic role in the Middle Ages, as the castle testifies it, built on the top of a hill (at an altitude of 770m). The keep stands out from the elliptical planed walls, offering a diversified panoramic view over the village in the east stretching down the hill; the fertile valley of Cesarão river, a Côa tributary river and Malcata Mountain in the southeast. Medieval bridge over Cesarão river and the old village quarter are also very interesting, as well as the entrance doors to the already vanished outdoor wall of Vilar Maior.
