Contacts
Located within a protected zone of Peneda-Gerês National Park, this dam is surrounded by Roman archaeological vestiges and roads. This was the last dam to be built under the hydroelectric programme of Cávado and Rabagão rivers (in 1972). Its main goal is to create a water reserve one level above Caniçada reservoir. During the day, the water is led through a forced pipe, activating a nearby dam central. During the night, when the electricity consumption is low, the water is plumbed, coming back to the initial reservoir. In the years that the reservoir reached its lowest level, the remains of the village became clearer. This dam submerged Vilarinho das Furnas village, despite the protests of locals in the final years of the dictatorship. Thanks to the wall, it is no possible to drive in the direction of Brufe, Ponte da Barca or Lindoso.
