In the end of the 13th century, Lagos castle was restored and enlarged, according to the order of King D. Dinis, becoming a 7-tower castle. The works proceeded under D. Afonso V ruling. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Lagos turned into an important centre, as far as the Discoveries and the trade with Morocco were concerned. Portuguese ships sailed off from here to discover the world. The city became increasingly wealthier, which led to the reinforcement of the defence, since there was the fear of the fear of being attacked from the sea. The 1755 earthquake caused serious damage. Both the 15th century wall and battlements have been restored in the meantime.
