The city had several defensive perimeters throughout time. Under D. João I there are references to a castle in ruins around the cathedral area. In the end of the 15th century, D. Afonso V built a wall perimeter, whose remains can still be seen nowadays. From the seven existing city doors, only Porta do Soar and Porta dos Cavaleiros lingered.
