Decades after the Conquer (1242), King D. Dinis restored the walls of Tavira Castle. Later on, D. Manuel built a new wall opening, closer to Rossio square, in order to make trade easier. The Porta Nova (New Door) in Roman arch ended up in the middle of the two buildings, connecting street Rua da Afeição to street Rua do Postigo. The main wall started here, leading to the north entrance. Some protection towers and wall vestiges can still be seen today in the middle of the houses, as for instance in Bela Fria zone. The castle has two square towers and an octagonal one. The entry is made through the Porta Norte (North Door) next to Santa Maria church. This door has also a Roman arch. Inside the square of arms there is a pleasant garden, for you can walk up the walls and enjoy a magnificent view over the city.
