Wool Museum of Beira Interior University is set in the former dying area of Real Fábrica de Panos next to Degoldra river stream, which was created by Marquis de Pombal in 1764. This museum opened its doors on April 30th in 1192. It aims to recover the memories of wool work in Covilhã city, the cradle of this activity in Portugal, through the reconstitution of manufacturing processes and wool tissues’ dying, used in the end of the 18th century. This museum includes three centres: the first one convers part of Real Fábrica de Panos do Marquês de Pombal, where we can observe 18th century furnaces; the second one is Real Fábrica Veiga and the third one is Râmolas de Sol (open-air spaces wehre tissues were dried and stretched), spread throughout the council. It was considered by UNESCO Europe’s best textile museum.
